Sukiyaki is Japan's ubiquitous one-pot complete meal. Even though it has beef, it can be considered healthy because in addition to being simmered, it contains a great balance of ingredients. This is true of most Japanese nabe (hot pot) dishes. A interesting historical food fact is that compared to other Japanese foods that have their origins back to the 1300s or earlier, Sukiyaki did not appear until the 1860s. That was when Japan first opened its shores to foreigners, and some of its food culture evolved to accommodate the changing times.
